How to Blend Summer into Autumn
As I write, it feels very much like Autumn has arrived, however, in this country we know better than to assume we can freefall towards Christmas in a variety of knitwear and boots. Bring your jumpers out in September and you can guarantee the 'Indian Summer' klaxon will sound and you'll regret not getting your legs waxed again.
So with this in mind, what is the secret to September style?
The answer is quick fixes in the form of layers and hero pieces you can add to your in-between looks to make the most of your lingering summer glow, ensuring you still look appropriate and are also ready for the weather, whichever way it goes. Here are some ideas:
1. A neutral-coloured blazer
It always feels like a luxury to leave the house without a jacket as it's not something we're able to do with confidence very often. I find a wool coat is rarely needed until November and to carry one around before then ends up being cumbersome. For that reason, a classic blazer is the perfect solution since it can be part of your outfit all day if necessary while being lightweight enough to hang over your arm should the sun come out. Oversized styles have been on-trend over the past couple of seasons but a shorter more nipped-in cut is reappearing in stores - either will work depending on which shape you prefer.
2. Add in new season shades
Rich warm shades such as burgundy, olive and chocolate brown are popping up everywhere and offer a lovely alternative to black this autumn. These colours look elegant worn head to toe but why not try mixing them up with summer pastels? More daring colour combos include burgundy with blush and dark brown with pale blue. For a more tentative approach, invest in a fabulous richly coloured bag or a pair of shoes or trainers.
3. Boho
Although boho tends to be associated with the summer months, this year it's here to stay - you may have noticed Sienna Miller creating a renewed interest with her latest whimsical collection for M&S. The good news is this trend's signature ruffles, maxi dresses and belts are perfect for mixing in with cardigans and boots so you won't have to worry about feeling cold if and when the temperature drops.
4. Autumn on one half
While it's still mild and you might have a bit of a tan, simply add an extra layer to your top half and stay summery on the bottom half. This summer's tailored Bermuda shorts or full midi skirt look elegant with bare legs and embellished Mary-Jane shoes while a cotton quilted print jacket or lightweight knit and cardigan are a nod to autumn on the top. If you're open to doing a preppy look, any knit can be thrown around the shoulders if the sun makes an appearance.
*Disclaimer: If by the time you read this email, we've had snow or freezing temperatures, all this will of course be irrelevant and I'll be happy to champion the coat. In the meantime, have a lovely and stylish September!
