How to Tweak & Update Your Winter Style

One of the many drawbacks about this country in January is that, with the best will in the world, welcoming in the fresh and new isn't that tempting when it's cold and dark outside and you're feeling skint and over-fed. It feels far too soon to have Easter bunnies in the supermarket let alone entertain the idea of lightweight fabrics and ditsy prints.

That said, January is the best time to put a rug over your knees and snuggle down to a long session in front of the telly or an uninterrupted flick through a real life magazine you can turn the actual pages of. Yes, this month I'm getting my inspiration from the awards season red carpets, the box and good old school magazines. I'm not ready for spring fashion (is anyone?) but I am interested in new ideas for the remaining cold months and as always, I particularly love an easy update to the winter outfits already in my wardrobe.

Here's what I've got my eye on trying out and suggesting to clients until at the very least the temperature is in double figures and we can abandon scarves and gloves:

1. Traitors; more specifically Claudia Winkleman's wardrobe, which is a masterclass in warm, sensible and cosy winter outfits that still manage to look stylish and cool. Think oversized Fairisle knits, chunky boots and high-neck blouses. Kudos to that stylist. The great thing about Claud's look is that while she is naturally wearing designer pieces, all of them can be found replicated on the high street.

2. The colours of the season but worn on your nails - if you hadn't noticed that red, burgundy and chocolate brown are a thing, then frankly you must have emerged from under a rock. So popular have these three wearable shades been that it's tricky to find decent knitwear in those colours now. But you can find a nail varnish or an eyeshadow for a really elegant winter style update; make a manicure appointment now and then invest in some fingerless gloves (Claudia Winkleman's fave) to show it off.

3. If you're feeling bored of your overcoat, take your favourite jumper and sling it around your shoulders over the top of your coat for a different and modern approach. Alternatively, if you have a belted coat, style your biggest scarf with both ends tucked through the belt to keep things neat.

4. Try your dressy jewellery worn with simple basics during the day. Pair statement earrings with a crisp white shirt or a bold necklace over a skinny dark polo neck. Or take inspiration from your grandmother's jewellery box and add a brooch (or two!) to either your scarf, coat or even your bag.
