How To Wear Your Floral Dress Now

The ongoing sunshine has prompted the question of what we're wearing now.
"Can I pull off this new buttermilk yellow?" is a popular enquiry.
"How do I style loafers?" is another.
Then, as I prepared to write this blog, a friend sent an exasperated message: "There must be something other than floaty floral dresses and white trainers, isn't there?"
Well, is there?

An Instagram row kicked off last year when a national daily declared the floral midi dress dead; 40 and 50-something women everywhere panicked. That same week, another stylish friend complained about how John Lewis had nothing but floral midi dresses - something didn't add up.
The depressing fact is, nowadays, when Generation Z pronounces a style to be over, it makes headlines. That doesn't necessarily mean it's true however. One glance at the high street confirms flowery prints are very much in evidence, if anything they're bigger and better than ever.
So how to wear your floral dress in 2025? It's all in the styling, you'll probably find it easier than you think...
1. Suede
Not the most practical fabric for high summer but in this transitional time, suede is perfect. Whether you dig out an old jacket or invest in one of this season's fabulous slouchy bags or preppy loafers, add suede to your pretty dress and you've instantly toughened it up. If in doubt, simply accessorise with an old belt.
2. Colour: part 1
If you have a floral frock you really love, this year switch it up by swapping your white trainers for a brightly coloured version. Where Adidas relaunched their classic Gazelles in vibrant green, orange and red shades, the high street has followed with equally eye-catching designs for a fraction of the price. I've fallen in love with a red and pink pair by New Look - under £30!

3. Colour: part 2
It can't have escaped your notice that a certain shade of yellow is everywhere at the moment. 'Buttermilk' is the softest shade of yellow you're likely to find so now even those of us with a fair complexion, can pull it off. Try a buttermilk jumper or cardigan layered over the top or slung around your shoulders. If you're feeling brave, clash it with pink or red to bring your look screaming into 2025.
4. Jewellery
For years now we've looked to boho for inspiration when it comes to our summer outfits. This year, think outside the jewellery box and go for solid gold cuff style bracelets and statement earrings to off-set the ditsy print. Or when was the last time you wore a brooch? Brooches are enjoying a revival currently, instead of pinning them on Queen Elizabeth II style, use one to create ruching at the shoulder or waist or even to fashion an asymmetric hemline. Keep an eye on my Instagram @emily_styled for a video on this hack.

And if you really can't do another summer in florals, there's always this season's polka dots. As always, if you need help organising your wardrobe, get in touch.
